Accessible Canoeing & Kayaking

Green Door has an extensive fleet of canoes and kayaks. Launched in 2019 to compliment our cycle hire service, the sessions are incredibly popular and a lot of fun! We have our own in-house instructors who will support you on sessions and the whole team will ensure your experience is enjoyable and above all else - safe!

We have buoyancy aids from 'tot size' to 5XL. There is no age restriction as long as a buoyancy aid can be fitted. Babies will not be allowed on the water. To be allowed on the water a buoyancy aid must be worn and fitted by our bankside team. If it is removed during paddling the partcipant will be supported off the water for refitting to continue paddling.

There is a range of unique adaptations for those with disabilities and supported needs to uphold our principle of accessibilty for all.

Working in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, we operate in the lakes in Tunstall, Hanley and Longton Park. Please visit 'Latest News' section for announcements on the website or Facebook for dates of future sessions.

Typically our sessions run between April and October in line with school holidays, when we have the highest demand. We use a turn up and paddle model so no need to book onto sessions.

Prices: £6 each for adults/£4 each for children 16 and under - You will have 30 minutes on the water.

Children will not be allowed to paddle on the water without being accompanied to the session by an adult aged 18+. Adults do not need to paddle.

If needed up to 2 carers can paddle free of charge.

August sessions

Come along to our hugely popular and successful canoeing and kayaking sessions.

Canoes

Our large red Canadian canoes can seat upto 4 people. Adults would typically sit at the front and rear - with the paddler at the back steering the boat. The middle seat can accomodate one or two children depending on size.

Single out-fitted Kayak

Our single solara kayaks can be fitted with outriggers for stability and the Universal seating system can be adjusted or removed individually allowing for quick set up for a wide range of paddlers.

These boats are designed for paddlers with supported needs. However,if available they will be used as and when required on our sessions.

Single Kayak

Our single kayaks are particularly popular with children.

Twin kayak

We have two twin kayaks. These can be adapted with outriggers and suported seating systems. We also have a transfer bench for those with limited mobility issues allowing a better loading experience for service users and our support staff.

Transfer Bench

This easy-to-use system provides a flat smooth transfer surface at wheelchair height when used with our kayak chariot. It provides independence for the paddler and safety for those assisting in the transfer.

The paddler slides to a transfer board, positioned directly above the kayak seat.

Adjustable handles enable the paddler to remove pressure from the transfer board, which is then removed - freeing the paddler to lower into the kayak seat.

Kayak Chariot

This unique design allows transfers on a flat level surface by position ing the cockpit rim at wheelchair height.

With the paddler in the kayak, the rig can be rolled in to the water and floated from the chariot - making most water entry points accessible.

Outriggers or stabilisers

Outriggers or stabilisers are attached too the rear of the boat and give confidence to the paddler/paddlers. They can be attached to single or double kayaks.

Adaptable seating

Providing as much support as required, these seating systems allow everyone to participate.

Each support can be tilted, adjusted or removed to create a custom fit.

All supports are cushioned for comfort.

The system can be mounted to a variety of bases.

Paddle Pivot

Allowing one arm control of the kayak, it also provides support to completely remove the weight of the paddle form the paddler's arms when using both arms
